It’s Never Too Late! Local Author Publishes First Solo Book at Last!

Bury St Edmunds local, lain Carruthers-Jones has released his first solo book.
Tell me…and Other Tales is a collection of short stories and poetry, some based on local history and others drawing on lain’s experiences as a consultant in the UK and around the world.

“It is a wonderful feeling to have a new career starting at this time in my life,”

-lain Carruthers-Jones

lain’s interest in writing developed when he and wife Sarah moved to Bury from London in 2019. Wanting to use his time creatively, he joined a small writing group called Left to Write, where keen local authors and poets got together to share their creations.

Then, in 2022, artist friend Rachel Baker asked him to write a story based on a set of watercolours she’d created, inspired by photographs of Polar Bears living in an abandoned weather station in the Arctic Circle.

“It just goes to show that age should never been seen a barrier to being creative and finding a new lease on life.”

-lain Carruthers-Jones

“I have become fascinated by the history and wildlife around Bury and often see curious artefacts that spark my interest and become stories. The title of the collection Tell me.. And Other Tales is a great example of that. While I was out walking our dog, Luna, I noticed a solitary plaque on the north wall of St Mary’s Church, with an unusual inscription.

In that story, titled Tell Me…I began to speculate on who Thomas and Mary Dorling might have been and why the inscription read as it did.
